GENDER Free Signs – Illinois LAW ~ law SB 556 — the Equitable Restrooms Act.
The Equitable Restrooms Act signed in Illinois, which takes effect on January 1, 2020, mandates that all single-occupancy restrooms “in a place of public accommodation or public building” to be identified as “all-gender and designated for use by no more than one person at a time or for family or assisted use… and each single-occupancy restroom shall be outfitted with exterior signage that marks the single-occupancy restroom as a restroom and does not indicate any specific gender.”
Illinois will join California, Vermont and New Mexico in creating equitable restroom laws, according to a news release from Equality Illinois, the state’s civil rights organizations for LGBTQ people.
“A simple yet powerful bill, SB 556 will provide privacy, security, and convenience to users of single-occupancy restrooms, including individuals who may need the assistance of a caregiver, people with disabilities, parents with opposite-sex children, and transgender people,” said Myles Brady Davis, communications manager and press secretary at Equality Illinois.

Supporters say compliance with the bill wouldn't be hard for businesses to adhere to: all restaurants and stores would have to do is replace the "male" and "female" signs on their single-stall restrooms with ones stating the facilities are open to everyone.
